Abuja, November 13, 2025- The Federal Fire Service (FFS), FCT Command, has partnered with the Kugbo Timber and Furniture Market to educate business operators on fire safety measures as the dry season begins.
The FCT Controller of the FFS, Mohammed Anas, received delegates from the Kugbo Market Association at the command’s headquarters on Thursday, where discussions centred on enhancing fire prevention and emergency response.
Anas commended the market’s executive members for responding to the invitation, noting that the meeting aimed to prevent a recurrence of fire incidents that had affected the market in previous harmattan seasons.
He said the engagement was focused on addressing the persistent risk of fire outbreaks in timber markets and developing practical strategies to mitigate such occurrences, given their susceptibility to combustion.
According to him, timber markets are particularly vulnerable to fires because of their combustible materials, adding that preventive measures were crucial to safeguarding lives and property.
The controller recommended the establishment of a fire station within or near the market to ensure rapid emergency response.
He also called for the installation of fire hydrants at strategic points in the area.
Anas advised traders to acquire fire extinguishers, position them at accessible locations, and undergo training on their proper use as well as general fire safety practices.
In his response, the Chairman of the Kugbo Market Association, Mr Augustine Abonyi, commended the FCT Fire Service for its proactive approach to preventing fire disasters in the market.
Abonyi pledged the full cooperation of the association in implementing the safety recommendations and supporting future initiatives aimed at protecting lives and property.
The both parties agreed to conduct a joint inspection of the market, followed by a comprehensive fire safety and disaster management training session for traders. (NAN)
